The biggest HR challenges for 2017
Our last blog discussed the ever-evolving HR landscape and how HR has moved from a purely ‘transactional’ role to a strategic entity and so following on from this, we are now going to talk about what we believe to be the top HR challenges HR professionals are facing in business at this point in time.
The HR professional no longer only looks after personnel issues. They are integral to the success of your business, the success of individuals within that business and maintaining motivation and a productive and positive work environment. With such responsibility comes both challenges and pressures and so we will go on to discuss what we feel are the biggest challenges for HR at this present point in time:
The strategic business partner
Do you have the title of ‘HR Business Partner’? Are you actually able to fulfil this role successfully or do you feel you’re still pushing paper and undertaking more of an administration role within the business? HR should be part of the leadership team at board level, helping to shape the future of the company, particularly when it comes to training and development and aligning talent in a way which has the desired effect on business outcomes. However, more often than not, this just isn’t the case and there’s still a lot of work to be done to convince individuals at board level that this involvement is needed.
Lack of communication
I would say lack of communication and miscommunication are issues we all face in business, it’s not just a sore point for the HR professional. However, it’s so important for leaders to regularly gather feedback from their teams to promote a supportive culture and team working ethos as well as ensuring issues aren’t festering and developing into something unnecessary. Instead, leaders should be promoting collaboration to aid success and growth.
You may be lucky enough to have an internal recruitment manager, or, you may be doing all the recruiting and onboarding yourself. Finding the right people is a tricky task and doing so on a non-existent budget, even harder. Job boards don’t always deliver the right people and results can be poor. New technologies can aid this process by automating sourcing and helping you to avoid wasting precious time.
Attracting and retaining talent
Your star players……How, as a business, in such a competitive marketplace, are you going to attract and then retain these individuals? It’s so important to ensure you have a strategy in place for attracting, retaining and engaging talent. This, coupled with a fantastic brand and a transparent culture makes for an environment where individuals can thrive and of course be happy!
Maintaining a healthy company culture
It’s really easy and simple to create a great company culture with fantastic communication and all of the above as a team of 10. However, it’s harder to maintain this as the company grows and your numbers start creeping up.
